Furniture Design Strata Chair by Ben Preston The designer sought to create a piece of furniture that acted as both a functional seat as well as a sculptural conversation piece. Strata was created using digital 3D modeling, allowing for the exploration of many possibilities before a final design was chosen. The wood 'bricks' are cut from sheets of plywood using CNC technology, and assembled by hand. The surfaces of the seat and footrest are polished to a shine, and contrast the exterior surface of the overall form. When not in use, the footrest can be placed on the seat, transforming the chair into a purely sculptural piece.
